Samsung Heartwise
Discovering a whole new approach to heart wellness.
Samsung HeartWise is a program for patients participating in a home-based heart wellness programs recommended by their doctor. It is designed to be used with the Samsung HeartWise smartphone app in conjunction with the Samsung Gear S3 to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Home-based cardiac rehab made simple
Patients who are recovering from major heart surgery usually follow a daily regime for rehabilitation including diet, medication and exercise prescribed by their physician. It’s not always convenient or possible to get to a clinic or to make regular appointments in order to have a consistent plan for optimal progress.
A new approach to heart rehabilitation programs
Together with Samsung’s development team, our designers and developers created an app for Samsung smartwatches and phones to plan a daily heart wellness routine. Using the heart rate monitor in the smartwatch, patients automatically record valuable data about their heart rate before, during and after exercise. This along with information about any symptoms they may experience is then securely shared with their physician who can keep a watchful eye on their progress.

HeartWise allows continuous communication between patients and their clinical teams, helping the patient feel accompanied whilst providing essential and time-sensitive information to their physician.
This tracking system has three main components that communicates between them: the patient's smartwatch app, the patient's mobile app, and a clinical portal. The app is available on Android and iOS app stores and is designed to be used with Samsung smartwatches.
The case manager monitors the heart rate, symptoms, and patient compliance with the daily tasks and medication intake in the clinical portal, allowing them to keep track of the patient's progress all in one platform.
Patients feel confident they are doing the right thing under the watchful eye of their doctor from the comfort of their own home.

Good health and wellbeing (SDG 3) was the main goal for HeartWise with innovation goals in mind (SDG 9: industry, innovation and infrastructure). We thought carefully about the contribution that this technology could mean for patients and doctors around the world. By partnering with Samsung (SDG 17) we combined their research and technology with our design to launch this convenient heart wellness tracker.
